Ginter puts in a strong performance

Germany’s U21 stars are already looking forward to the European Championship, which takes place in the Czech Republic between the 17th-30th June. The eligible players will be aiming to put in great performances in the Bundesliga ahead of the tournament, in order to catch the attention of the coaching staff. The ‘U21 Overview’ is a new series on DFB.de: Every Tuesday we will profile some of the eligible players and examine their form at club level.

Malli grabs the winner

The game between SC Freirbug and 1. FSV Mainz 05 features four Germany U21 stars. Mainz’s goalkeeper Loris Karius stood out early on. He made a number of top saves in the first half and played a role in the opener. His long ball surprised the Freiburg defence and after good work from Jairo, Shinji Okazaki fired home to open the scoring. He doubled the lead on the stroke of half time.

The game sprung into life in the final ten minutes. Mehmedi got one back for the hosts in the 81st minute but Yunus Malli extended the lead soon after. Schmid scored a consolation goal for Freiburg in injury time. Germany U21 players Karius, Malli and Geis came out on top, Freiburg’s Günter was left empty handed.

Ginter impresses for Dortmund

Matthias Ginter started for Borussia Dortmund this weekend for the first time since January and almost crowned his return with an early goal. His long range effort forced a classy save from Paderborn goalkeeper Kruse. Ginter’s team mates were unable to open the scoring in the first half.

They took the lead after 48 minutes through Mkhitaryan and their advantage was doubled by Aubameyang seven minutes later. The latter goal was assisted by Ginter, his first one of the season. Shinji Kagawa put the icing on the cake with a third goal for the hosts in the 80th minute.

Another clean sheet for Horn

1. FC Köln kept their 11th clean sheet of the season this weekend against Hertha BSC. Timo Horn was partly responsible for the point; he did well to prevent Langkamp, Stocker and Kalou from opening the scoring.
