Gibraltar to host Germany in Faro

The European Championship qualifier between Gibraltar and World Champions Germany on June 13th 2015 will take place in Faro, Portugal after Gibraltar’s football association (GFA) confirmed Faro as the venue. Speculation had been made that Gibraltar might play the remainder of their 2016 European Championships qualifiers in London.

The UEFA newcomers will play their remaining games against the DFB team, Ireland (September 4th 2015) and Scotland (October 11th 2015) at the Estádio do Algarve, which is where they played their games against Poland (0-7) and Georgia (0-3).

Gibraltar’s national stadium does not meet UEFA requirements

Gibraltar were only announced as a UEFA member in May 2013. The national stadium (Victoria Stadium) does not match UEFA’s requirements for a qualifier, as it only has a capacity of 5,000. Following their “home debut” against Portugal, the GFA looked into tax and security issues concerned with their new “home stadium” in south Portugal. It’s said that these have now been resolved to the satisfaction of Gibraltar’s football association.

A new security firm was hired for the game against Georgia, in order to ensure the safety at the ground which has a capacity of 30,000. Germany host Gibraltar on November 14th (20.45 CET) in Nürnberg.
