Germany's women secure ticket to European Championship

Preparations for EURO 2017 can begin. The Germany women's side secured their ticket to the finals in Holland with a win in their sixth qualifying match. Sylvia Neid's team wrapped up a 2-0 win over Croatia at the osnatel-Arena in Osnabrück and guaranteed themselves top spot in Group 5 as a result of Russia only managing a 3-3 draw with Hungary. Frankfurt's Dzsenifer Marozsán and Anja Mittag were on the scoresheet for Germany either side of half time.

"Aside from our poor chance conversation, we played very well. We could have scored three or four more goals," said Alexandra Popp to ARD. "In any case, we've qualified and we're delighted."

The two-time World Cup winners and eight-time European Champions can now focus on this summer's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. A delegation from Germany will fly to Brazil on Wednesday for the draw for the tournament. After the games, Silvia Neid will step down and hand the post on to current assistant Steffi Jones.
