Germany's women and men discover Olympic fate

Germany’s two football teams in this summer’s Olympic Games (3rd to 20th August 2016) today found out who they will face in the group stages. Germany Women have been drawn in Group F, alongside Canada, Australia and Zimbabwe. The U21 men’s side have been placed in Group C together with Fiji, Mexico and South Korea. This was revealed earlier today at the draw in Brazil’s famous Maracana stadium. The final of both teams’ tournaments are due to take place in the same stadium on the 19th and 20th August respectively.

"All three groups are evenly-matched," said head coach Silvia Neid, who travelled to Rio along with Doris Fitschen for the draw. "Australia are current champions of Asia, and knocked Japan out of the tournament. That alone shows their quality. Canada made it to the quarterfinals of the World Cup last year. Both are tough teams to face. Zimbabwe are unknown to us, and in that sense are the surprise package."

Their campaign begins on August 3rd against Zimbabwe, before facing Australia three days later. The final match of the group has been scheduled for August 9th against Canada.

Hrubesch: "We want to go far, that much is clear"

Horst Hrubesch also travelled to South America for the much-anticipated draw. "They will be interesting matches, and I am already looking to the first game against Mexico," exclaimed the head coach: "I have never played against Fiji, it will be interesting. The Germany national side thoroughly enjoyed their preparations for the 2014 World Cup in Salvador and Belo Horizonte."

Hrubesch continued: "We want to go far, that much is clear. I am pleased with the draw. All the teams can play football. We will now prepare fully for our opponents and take it step by step - hopefully all the way."
