Germany's U17 suffer defeat to Mexico

Having already secured a place in the round of 16, Germany's U17 side missed out on topping their group at the World Cup in Chile after losing their final group match to Mexico. Christian Wück's side suffered a 2-1 loss but are set to face Croatia in the round of 16 on Thursday at 21:00 CET.

"Mexico deserved to win. We didn’t find our rhythm or our form. Individually we made some mistakes during our build-up game, which prevented us from executing our game plan," Wück explained after the game. But the DFB coach was already looking ahead: "We won't be dropping our heads now. We played well in the group stages and we are still in the tournament."

A balanced encounter

The match in the Estadio Fiscal was largely even in the first half, with only three shots recorded in the opening 45 minutes. Johannes Eggestein's header five minutes before the break was the best opportunity in the first half. After the break, Eggestein nearly scored from close range but his attempt went wide.

Mexico took the lead on the hour mark with Pablo Lopez's deflected shot leaving keeper Constantin Frommann chanceless. Francisco Venegas doubled Mexico's lead just six minutes later, before Eggestein pulled one back all within the space of eight minutes. Gökhan Gül squandered a big chance for the equaliser in the closing stages of the match.

Germany recorded clear victories in their opening two group games, winning 4-1 against Australia and 4-0 against Argentina, which saw them book a ticket for the next round prior to their last group encounter. The DFB team is looking to win its first youth World Cup title since the 1981 U20 World Cup in Australia. The German U17 side came close to success earlier this year in the summer, when they lost 4-1 in the final of the European Championships to France.
