Germany Women play out stalemate with England

The Germany Women’s national team have rounded off 2015 with a 0-0 draw against England. Manager Silvia Neid’s side put in a good performance in Duisburg, but failed to take advantage of some decent goalscoring opportunities and thus couldn’t get revenge for their narrow 1-0 defeat in extra time in the third-place play-off at the 2015 World Cup in Canada.

England really asked a lot of us, but we unfortunately we didn’t play as well as we’d hoped today. Nevertheless, Felicitas Rauch and Lina Magull both had great games. There’s a lot promise in our young players – that’s the positive to take from today,” said Anja Mittag following her 132nd international appearance.

There were emotional scenes before kick-off at the Schauisland-Reisen-Arena. Neid, DFB general secretary Helmut Sandrock and the 6,705 spectators paid tribute to Nadine Angerer and Celia Sasic for their services for the Germany national team, while Sasic was also presented with the Golden Boot after finishing as the 2015 World Cup’s top scorer. Both players ended their careers following the tournament in Canada. Still active striker Mittag was also awarded the Bronze Boot after finishing third in the goalscoring charts at the World Cup.
