Germany women on course for the European Championship with 2-0 win over Russia

The women’s national team are determined and focused on the European Championship in the Netherlands. On Thursday afternoon, Silvia Neid’s team defeated Russia 2-0 and celebrated their third win of the qualifying campaign. Germany are top of their group, with a goal difference of 15 scored and none conceded. Mandy Islacker brought Germany into the lead after eight minutes, and three minutes into the second half, Leonie Mayer doubled the lead and secured the win for Germany.

"We played well up until the goal. We were calm on the ball, had good ideas, played the ball wide and cut through their defence well, something that is not easy to do against the Russians. If we had taken our chances it would have been 4-0 at half time. But after that, we did everything better," said Neid after the game. Islacker was very happy with her debut in the first team. "I didn’t think that I would be in the starting eleven. I was surprised but I gave it everything, and it went very well!"

Germany Women will play again on Sunday in a European Championship game against Turkey. Kickoff is at 14:15 CET in Sandhausen.
