Germany Women face France in quarter finals

Germany’s footballers must now face France in the quarter finals of the Women’s World Cup in Canada. “Les Bleues” progressed from the round of 16 with a commanding 3-0 win against South Korea, setting up a quarter-final tie in Montreal on Friday (22:00 CEST) with Germany, who beat Sweden 4-1 on Saturday.

“France are a technically brilliant team, with great ability in every position,” said coach Silvia Neid. “I’m expecting a game between two even teams, who don’t want to give anything away.”

Philippe Bergeroo’s strong attacking unit had few problems against the Asian underdogs in front of 15,518 spectators at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium. With Germany’s coach watching from the stands, Marie-Laure Delie scored twice, and Elodie Thomis once, for the team ranked third in the world and which finished fourth at the 2011 World Cup in Germany.

The two-time World Cup winner and eight-time European Champion has won eight out of 13 previous meetings with the French. The Équipe Tricolore has won three times, the last being their 2-0 friendly victory in Offenbach last October.
