Germany win Algarve Cup after 2-0 win against England

The DFB Under-17s have won the Algarve Cup in Portugal. The 2-0 win in the final against England was the third win from three games for Christian Wück’s side. Their previous wins came against hosts Portugal and the Netherlands, both of which finished 1-0.

Werder Bremen’s Niklas Schmidt opened the scoring in Faro in the 8th minute, after he won the ball back in his own half and went on a solo run before firing home to put Germany 1-0 in front. A few minutes later, Görkem Saglam struck to make it 2-0 (16’). After some lovely build-up play down the right hand side, Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Passlack provided the VfL Bochum midfielder with a perfect pass inside the six yard box.

After winning the Algarve Cup, Wück’s side now have European qualifiers coming up in March in Wetzlar and Marburg against Slovakia, Italy and Ukraine. If they qualify, the European Championship finals will take place from 6th to 22nd May in Bulgaria.
