Germany vs. Ukraine: The numbers don't lie

The stats often show us the real difference between two teams. We at DFB.de have had a peek at the numbers from Germany’s opening game of EURO 2016 against Ukraine – take a look for yourselves...

Firstly, the most important figure: Germany 2-0 Ukraine. This refers to the number of goals scored, and they lead to figures of higher importance: Germany 3-0 Ukraine. This refers to the number of points scored, and they lead to figures of higher importance still: Germany 1-4 Ukraine. This refers to their place in the Group C table.

Beneath these numbers there is a lot of analysis, which can help to explain them. Germany finished below their opponents in only one area, according to UEFA’s official statistics: Ukraine ran 115.1 kilometres, compared to Germany’s 113.6 kilometres. Germany ran less because their opponents were chasing them for most of the game, as they let the ball do the work. Germany had 63 percent of possession, Ukraine had 37. Germany made 678 passes, Ukraine made 288. 621 of the Germany team’s passes were completed, which meant a success rate of 92 percent. Ukraine were on target only 227 times – 79 percent of all attempts. Germany had 18 shots compared to Ukraine’s nine. Germany had nine shots on target, whereas Ukraine had only three.

Toni Kroos: Top of the list in all areas

The player with number 18 on his back was largely responsible for this. Prozone Sports GmbH reported that Toni Kroos had possession of the ball 127 times, which included 293 touches for the 26-year-old. His average pass length was 20.1 metres. How many passes did he make? 127 – every touch!

During this European Championship, the packing rate was also calculated by match analysts at Impect – a company owned by Stefan Reinartz and Jens Hegeler. And in this regard, Kroos was also top, as he went past opposition players 112 times. That is more than the entire Northern Ireland team during their 1-0 defeat against Poland. World champions Germany achieved the highest packing rate of any team in EURO 2016 so far. National coach Joachim Löw’s team went past 391 opponents, of which 52 were defenders. Ukraine’s value was only 162 (19 defenders). Even Germany’s defensive leader Jerome Boateng took players on 75 times.

Die Mannschaft won, and the victory was deserved. However you look at it, the numbers don’t lie!
