Germany U21s international Öztunali scores in Mainz win

1. FSV Mainz 05 have their first win of 2017. In the first game of matchday 20, the Zerofivers celebrated a 2-0 home win over FC Augsburg, Germany U21s international Levin Öztunali scored the hosts’ first (31’), before Jairo converted a 62nd minute penalty as Mainz claimed all three points.

With this victory, Mainz have taken a big step forwards in the table, moving into ninth place from 13th – overtaking their opponents tonight in the process.

Öztunali finishes a lightning-quick counter

23,371 spectators at the Opel-Arena watched as winter signing Bojan Krkic made his first start for his new side. Mainz came out of the traps more positively, and had the better of the opening exchanges. Martin Hinteregger and Jeffrey Gouweleeuw were both called into action on separate occasions to cut out decisive passes from Cordoba and Bojan.

FCA fought back though, as Baier sent two shots from outside the box on Jonas Lössl’s goal. The goalkeeper both times however denied Augsburg’s number ten. From an Augsburg corner, Martin Schmidt’s men countered quickly, as Cordoba headed the ball to the on-running Öztunali who in turn used his head to find the back of the net.

Jairo seals it from the spot

FCA started the second half on the front foot, but could put the Zerofiver goal under any serious danger. Instead of the visitors equalising, Hitz brought down Cordoba in the box and the referee pointed to the spot. Jairo Samperio stepped up and doubled the Zerofivers' lead, putting the ball down the middle of the goal, with Hitz diving to his right (62’). For the remaining time, Mainz kept the ball well, taking the pace out of the game. In the 81st minute, FCA almost started an unlikely comeback, but Bobadilla could only head a cross into the arms of Lössl. And this is how it ended, with Baum's men having to travel back to Augsburg with nothing to show for their efforts - a stark contrast to last week's showing against Bremen.
