Germany U20s overcome Netherlands in Elite Cup

The Germany U20 national team have won their second game of the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup. Frank Wormuth’s side beat the Netherlands 2-1 on Saturday evening. Thilo Kehrer and Boubacar Barry scored either side of half time for Germany, who will now face England in what promises to be an exciting final on Tuesday in the Voith Arena in Heidenheim.

Germany put their stamp on the game right from the off – lots of possession, accurate passing, building attacks early. We didn’t have to wait long for the game’s first chance – Lukas Klünter found Boubacar Barry in the penalty area, but his effort went just wide.

Kehrer gives Germany the lead

2,312 spectators watched on in the SCHOLZ Arena as Germany dominated the match, and they deservedly went ahead after just 15 minutes when Schalke’s Thilo Kehrer headed in Marvin Stefaniak’s corner to put Germany 1-0 up.

"In terms of our performance, I’m very happy with the first half hour. After that we dropped off a little, but we regained our solidity in the second half and went on to create more chances," praised Wormuth. "The team battled incredibly well today."

Such a dominant performance meant the Netherlands’ equaliser was even more disappointing. The goal itself came almost from nothing – Finn Stokkers converted a penalty to level the scores just before the break.

Barry puts Germany back in front

Germany continued to pile on the pressure in the second half. Boubacar Barry of Karlsruher SC took aim from over 20 yards out and found the net to put Germany 2-1 in front. The Netherlands, as expected, came back into the game, and Germany were forced to dig deep to maintain their lead in the second period – but they pulled through to win their second game of the tournament after beating Turkey 1-0 on Wednesday.

Next up for the U20s in the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup is a grudge match against England on Tuesday. England’s youth side have also won their two games in the tournament so far. "Now we’re looking forward to the ‘final’ against England," said Wormuth of what looks to be an enticing clash in Heidenheim. "It will be a real challenge for the team." Due to their worse goal difference, Germany have to win the game to lift the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup.
