Germany U20s lose to Italy

The Germany U20s began the international season with a 1-0 loss to Italy. It was Guido Streichbier’s debut in the dugout for the U20s but despite a convincing performance his side couldn’t help another narrow loss to the Italians.

“I can get over the loss today as we put out a totally new team and it was clear that we weren’t working together as well as we could have done. My team was lively but it was a sloppy goal that we conceded. We want to try plenty of things out and continue to improve between the two internationals,” commented Streichsbier after full time.

The teams last faced off in the first group match of the European U19 Championship in Baden-Württemberg, where Germany lost 1-0 as well to the competition’s runners-up even though they created more chances. Italy had a very similar team to the one that took to the field for the last encounter, while Germany had a largely new team, with many of the players who took part in the European Championship being given a rest.

Germany had more possession and the better of the exchanges during a first half in front of 2106 spectators. The first clear chance of the game fell to the visitors though as Luca Vido found himself alone in the DFB box with only Borussia Mönchengladbachs Moritz Nicolas to beat, fortunately he couldn’t hit the target and the ball flew over the crossbar. The main chance for the Germany U20s fell to 1. FC Heidenheim’s Robin Becker but his header was just off target in the 41st minute.

Kader and Donkor fail to equalise

The Germany U20s began to increase the pressure after the restart but it was the hosts who would concede as Frederic Ananou deflected a shot from Vido into his own goal. The DFB team created a number of decent openings as they pressed forward looking for an equaliser, with Frankfurt’s Enis Bunjaki looking particularly dangerous. The best chances fell to Cagatay Kader, who came close with a free-kick in the 85th minute and Anton Donker, but they just couldn’t get the ball over the line. Italy stayed alert, looked to counter and made sure they didn’t let their lead slip.

Germany will have their second match of the international season when they face Poland in the Miejski stadium in Świnoujście on Tuesday, 6th September (17:00 CEST). The highlight of the season will be the the U20 World Cup in South Korea (20th May to 11th June).
