Germany U17s take big step towards the EUROs with 5-1 win against Czech Republic

Germany's U17 national team have taken a big step towards the European Championships in Iceland. In their second match in the qualifying round in Montepulciano they secured a 5-1 victory against the Czech Republic.

"It was tough work for us today. The Czech Republic were well organised and we struggled at first," explained DFB U17 coach Anouschka Bernhard after the game. "We only took control of the game after about 30 minutes. We worked hard to get a 3-0 lead by half time. Things went a little easier towards the end. We are happy with how the game went and our performance."

Feldkamp, Gwinn, Kardesler and Sanders on target

Germany had already recorded a 6-0 victory against Belarus in their opening qualifying game. With six points they lead their group ahead of the Czech Republic (3 points), Italy and Belarus (both 0 points). Germany's next game is on Tuesday (16:00 CEST) against the tournament's hosts Italy. By then they will already know what result they need to qualify, as Belarus and Italy will play each other on Saturday (16:30 CEST). The DFB team would already be automatically qualified as group winners should Italy fail to earn a win from that game. The European Championships will take place in Iceland between 18th June and 4th July.

Jana Feldkamp (19') from SGS Essen, an own goal from Nela Cizkova (38') and SV Weingarten's Giulia Gwinn (40') provided Germany with a three goal lead at half time against the Czech Republic. Skipper Vildan Kardesler from SV Burgsteinfurt converted a penalty in the 68th minute and Werder Bremen's Stefanie Sanders (73') were on target in the second half, with Michela Dubvova scoring a consolation goal (79') shortly before the end of the game.

The six group winners and the two best second-placed teams will qualify for the European Championships from these qualifying tournaments. Germany are record holders in this age-class with four EURO titles, winning the trophy most recently in England in 2013.
