Germany U16s lose to Portugal on penalties

The Germany U16s lost their first match of the UEFA U16 tournament, 5-4 on penalties to hosts Portugal. The match was level at 3-3 after 80 minutes. Throughout the tournament, UEFA are trialling a new points format, whereby if a match is drawn, there is a penalty shootout. As the Portuguese won the shootout, they gained an extra point and are now on two points, whereas Germany’s up-and-comers only have one point on the board. Winning teams will receive three points as usual.

The Portuguese team took the lead through Rafael Camacho’s shot from a narrow angle, after DFB-manager Christian Wück’s side lost possession of the ball on their own touchline. Shortly before half time, Jonathan Burkardt from Mainz equalised, by tapping in an attempted shot from Leipzig’s Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn from close range.

In the second half, the game burst into life. Straight after the break, substitute Elias Abouchabka gave Germany the lead. The Leipzig attacker scored with a carbon-copy of the Schluss – Kühn combination for the first goal. Shortly after, Romàrio Baró squared the game up with a headed effort. However, from the restart, the Germans took the lead once again through Leipzig’s Kilian Ludewig. There was to be more drama though, as Stuttgart’s José Enrique Rios-Alonso put the ball into his own goal, to level the game at 3-3.

On Saturday, at 17.00 (CET), Germany will face France, before playing the Netherlands on Monday at 15.00 (CET). All the games will be played in Küstenort Vila Real Santo Antonio.
