For the first time in the history of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, Brazil will not take part in the semi-final stage of the competition, after being defeated 3-2 by Germany in Coquimbo.
Germany gave warning of their intent on four minutes when Marina Hegering sent a shot onto the crossbar, and the Europeans took control of the game in the first period. Nevertheless, they failed to create many clear chances, and it was Brazil who went ahead on 38 minutes, when a shot from Adriane on the right was parried into her own net by German captain Carolin Schiewe.
Leah, Brazil's long-throw expert, almost scored a spectacular second when one of her acrobatic throw-ins eluded the entire German defence but drifted over the crossbar. Just before half-time, Germany got back on level terms, when Hegering sent the ball through to Sylvie Banecki, who scythed her way through the Brazilian defence and scored.
Germany regained control of the game after the interval, and half-chances for Kim Kulig and Hegering were followed by a goal on 68 minutes. Substitute Lisa Schwab, on the left, played a neat pass through to Nathalie Bock, who ran on to beat Brazilian keeper Viviane. The left wing was the chosen route for Germany's third as well, when Katharina Baunach's cross was knocked in by the other Banecki twin, Nicole.
Brazil managed to make the final moments a nervous prospect for Germany by scoring a second two minutes from the close, Adriane's shot being fumbled into the net by German keeper Alisa Vetterlein. But the Europeans held on, and will now face the USA in Coquimbo on 4 December, in the second semi-final.
