Germany primed for semi-final with France

Germany’s U-20 women’s team are in confident mood ahead of their semi-final meeting with France at the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada (live on Eurosport from 01:00), but also full of respect for their opponent. Indeed, both have impressed observers at the tournament so far with strong attacking displays that meant each side ended the group phase having scored 12 goals.

While France only managed to overcome Korea Republic after a penalty shootout in their quarter-final encounter, coach Maren Meinert’s charges booked their place in the last four with a 2-0 victory over hosts Canada.

Bremer: "We’ll have to give everything"

However, Germany do not have fond memories of the French ensemble after falling to a 2-1 defeat in the semi-finals of the U-19 European Championship in August 2013. France went on to lift the title with the same crop of players that won the U-17 World Cup in 2012.

Pauline Bremer, who scored Germany’s goal in that fixture with France last year, is anticipating another tough match: "Of course we want to do better than we did in the semi-finals of the Euro. It always depends on your form on the day. We’ll have to give it absolutely everything."

Nigeria or North Korea await

Meinert is also expecting an evenly-balanced game against a technically-gifted side that are strong in possession: "We know what France’s strength’s are. We’re up for the challenge and what to play good football. I think it’ll be an open, tense game between two very good attacking teams. It might come down to who keeps it tighter at the back. It’ll definitely be an exciting match."

The other semi-final takes place earlier in the day (live on Eurosport from 22:00) between Nigeria and North Korea, who surprisingly knocked out reigning champions USA 3-1 on penalties.
