Germany miss out on the final

The Germany U17s have been eliminated at the semi-final stage of this year’s European Championship, which is being played in Azerbaijan. Meikel Schönweitz’s side lost 2-1 to Spain on Wednesday evening, despite leading 1-0 at the break.

"We played well in the first half and deservedly took the lead, but were unable to grab a second. Spain were much stronger after the interval and ultimately we have to accept that they were the better side on the day," explained Schönweitz. "The lads played well throughout the tournament and it will have been a great experienced for them. At the minute the elimination hurts, however, our performances have shown that we have a promising future."

Second half turnaround

Germany took the lead through Renat Dadashov after just 10 minutes of the game in Baku, however, goals from Abel Ruiz and Brahim Díaz turned the game around midway through the second period. It could have been worse for Schönweitz’s men but Jordi Mboula hit the upright with a 56th-minute penalty.

The desire to score a late equaliser caught up with Germany, who were reduced to ten men in injury time when goalkeeper Bartels was sent off in injury time.
