Germany lose 2-1 to Denmark in Euro quarterfinal

The Germany Women’s team are out of EURO 2017 after losing 2-1 to Denmark in the quarterfinal. Germany took an early lead through Isabel Kerschowski (3’) but goals from Nadia Nadim (49’) and Theresa Nielsen (83’) secured victory for the Danes, who will now face either Austria or Spain in Thursday’s semi-final.

Germany made a good start to the game, opening the scoring with their first chance. Isabel Kerschowski (3’), who got the nod ahead of Carolin Simon on the left, wrongfooted goalkeeper Stina Lykke Petersen to fire home from about 18 metres out.

Steffi Jones’ team continued to dominate with Kristin Demann (7’), Dzsenifer Marozsan (12’) and Linda Dallmann (24’) all wasting opportunities. Denmark grew into the game as the half went on with chances to equalise falling to both Katrine Veje (38’) and Sanne Troelsgaard (45’).

The Scandinavians continued to put pressure on Germany after the break. Referee Katalin Kulcsar played advantage after a Marozsan foul and forward Nadia Nadim (49’) rose highest to head Denmark level.

The game then opened up and there was plenty of drama as well as chances at both ends. Anja Mittag’s header (74’) skimmed over the crossbar before Schult (76’) was lucky to not concede a penalty.

The late winner came from the 2012 Danish Footballer of the Year. Theresa Nielsen (83’) met the cross from the right to head Denmark into the semi-final. Germany kept fighting until the end but it finished 2-1 to Denmark.
