Germany internationals Mesut Özil and Mario Gomez set for comebacks

Germany national team coach Joachim Löw received some good news with just 57 days to go before the World Cup kicks-off in Brazil (from 12 June to 13 July), with Mesut Özil and Mario Gomez poised to return to action. After Arsenal’s 3-1 London derby victory over West Ham United on Tuesday evening, the Gunners’ manager Arsène Wenger revealed that Özil has recovered from a thigh strain and is set to be included in the Arsenal squad that will travel to Hull City on Sunday. The 25-year-old picked up the injury in his side’s Champions League last 16 second leg encounter away to Bayern Munich on 11 March and subsequently missed Arsenal’s next seven competitive outings.

Gomez: Timely cup final return

Gomez is not quite as far along the road to recovery as his Germany team-mate, but the 28-year-old has returned to training at Fiorentina three weeks after tearing knee ligaments, although he is still undergoing an individually tailored program. Reports in Italian media suggest that the former Bundesliga star will resume full training in the next few days, with a comeback pencilled in ahead of the club’s cup final against Napoli on 3 May in Rome.

The 59-time Germany international damaged medial collateral ligaments in his left knee on 23 March and has been receiving treatment in Munich from Bayern’s club doctor Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. Gomez had already missed approximately six months of the current season with an injury in his right knee.
