Germany internationals face off in Madrid and Liverpool

A number of Germany internationals will continue their European campaigns this week in both the Champions League and the Europa League. The quarterfinals of both competitions will be played from today and all of the national team players still involved have a realistic chance of progressing to the semi-finals.

Champions League: Wolfsburg have given themselves a very good chance of progressing to the semi-finals of the Champions League after a surprise 2-0 home-win over Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash. If Julian Draxler and André Schürrle’s team manage to secure an away goal at the Bernabau, Toni Kroos and Real Madrid will need to score four in order to progress. Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller & Co. will travel with Bayern München to the Estádio da Luz Lisbon as slight favourites and are looking to make it to their fifth consecutive Champions League semi-final by overcoming Benfica. Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen and Barcelona will enter the second leg with Atletico Madrid with a narrow 2-1 lead after winning at the Nou Camp first time round. Things are looking slightly more difficult for Kevin Trapp, who is competing with Ter Stegen to be the national team’s second choice goalkeeper behind Manuel Neuer. His team Paris St. Germain drew 2-2 in the Parc des Princes last week against Manchester City.

Europa League: At least one Germany international will be competing in the semi-finals of the Europa League. Borussia Dortmund with Mats Hummels, Marco Reus, Ilkay Gündogan & Co., will face off against fellow national team player Emre Can and Liverpool. The latter holds a slight advantage going into the second leg after Liverpool grabbed an away goal in the 1-1 draw in Dortmund.
