Germany European Championship All-Star team

This would certainly be a difficult side to beat… On our Facebook channel we gave fans the opportunity to vote for the best Germany European Championship side position-by-position. Spanish, English, German and French fans took part in the selection of history’s top Germany representatives. The result of the combined votes was an All-Star XI made up of individual greats that is very easy on the eyes.

In goal we have Oliver Kahn who won the keeper vote convincingly. The defensive back line is made up of Philipp Lahm, Franz Beckenbauer and Jürgen Kohler. Next up: a technically-gifted midfield. Lothar Matthäus, Michael Ballack, Mehmet Scholl and Günter Netzer make up the transition between defence and attack. The attacking line is spear-headed by Gerd Müller. On the wings Rudi Völler and Miroslav Klose support the nation's Bomber.

Kahn - Lahm, Beckenbauer, Kohler - Matthäus, Ballack, Scholl, Netzer - G. Müller, Völler, Klose.

Individual countries' favourites

While the combined vote gives an overall XI, the individual countries had some different choices as to who their favourites were. The German fans chose Oliver Kahn over Sepp Maier, Andreas Köpke and Toni Schumacher. In defence Beckenbauer, Lahm and Kohler behind a middle four of Matthäus,Ballack, Scholl and Netzer. Gerd Müller, Klose and Völler lead the front line. The German selection was the same as the joint one.

The English fans had four changes over the three main areas of the pitch. Kahn stayed in goal but Brehme replaced Kohler in the back line. Instead of Scholl and Netzer, Sammer and Möller came into midfield. Up front, Klinsmann replaced Völler.
