Germany come from behind twice to draw 2-2 in the European Championship opener

The Germany U17s drew 2-2 with Ukraine in their opening game of the European championship in Azerbaijan. In the national stadium in Baku, Denys Yanakov put Ukraine ahead after 33 minutes, only for Yari Otto to score the much deserved equaliser for manager Meikel Schönweitz’s DFB youngsters four minutes later. In the second half, Germany pushed for a goal, but it was Ukraine who took the lead again. An intended cross from Serhiy Bulesta in the 67th minute found its way into the back of the net. In the 74th minute, Sam-Francis Schreck brought the scores level and the game ended 2-2. Ukraine’s goalkeeper Andriy Lunin prevented a number of potential DFB winners with a string of top saves.

"We dominated the game, came from behind twice and showed character throughout. Furthermore, the team kept creating chances. That’s what we can take from the game," summarised Schönweitz, calling for an analysis: "Ukraine scored both of their goals from set-pieces. We have to live with that and analyse the situations. Obviously we’re a little disappointed about the outcome at the moment, but we will channel that anger into positive energy for the next game."

For their second game in Group B, Germany will face the U17s of Bosnia-Herzegovina (Sunday, 17:00 CEST), who lost their opener against Austria 2-0 thanks to a Christoph Baumgartner brace.
