Germany secured a place in the playoffs for next summer's UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals in Sweden. A goalless draw against Israel in the final game of the group stage was enough for the first place finish. Israel also progressed as one of the four best runners-up.
Sami Khedira wasted a fine early chance for Germany after nine minutes when he headed wide. On the other side Yoval Avidor failed to convert a presentable opportunity when well-placed (25.). Twelve minutes from time Sandro Wagner directed a header against the crossbar.
EC qualifier: Germany vs Israel, Duisburg
The playoff-games, which will eventually determine the seven participants for the 2009 European Championships in Sweden, are scheduled for October 10/14. The draw for the tournament will take place at Malmo, Sweden, on Friday.
The victors from each two-legged tie will join hosts Sweden in the competition proper from 15 to 29 June 2009.
