World Champions Germany lost their first friendly after winning the European Championships this year. In front of a sellout crowd of 28,367 at the World Cup arena in Augsburg the Germans were beaten by the USA 0-1 (0-1).
Germany dominated the game from the start, but Birgit Prinz, Inka Grings, Simone Laudehr, Linda Bresonik, Kim Kulig and Kerstin Garefrekes all wasted clear opportunities. Abby Wambach then scored for the Olympic gold medalists in the 34th minute, thus punishing the Germans for not being on target.
Germany coach Silvia Neid was still happy with the game: "The team showed some very good plays here at Augsburg. The USA didn't have many opportunities. The only thing that was missing was the precision in the penalty box."
The Americans are now 17-4-4 all-time against Germany.
