German women beat Nigeria 1-0

The German women football team won the second game of the Olympic tournament against Nigeria 1-0 (0-0). After a scoreless tie against Brazil in their first match, Kerstin Stegemann scored the decisive goal in the 65th minute after the defender ran into a cross by Anja Mittag. Germany is now about to reach the quarterfinals.

"We are on a good way, but still have to improve with regard to the offense", German coach Silvia Neid said after the victory against Nigeria. In their last match of the preliminary round, Germany face North Korea in Tianjin on Tuesday.

The two top teams in the group qualify automatically for the next round. The two best third-place teams of the three groups also advance to the quarterfinals. “We have so many good players on our team, yet we’re even better as a team. Nobody can take that away from us”, the team’s captain Birgit Prinz had said prior to the match against Nigeria. Prinz was just honoured by the German media as “Player of the Year”, an award she has received eight years in a row.
