German woman make huge strides towards the EC

The reigning World and European Champions faced the Netherlands on Thursday in a qualifying round game for the next continental championships in Finland. Silvia Neid's team closed out a perfect year with one more victory. The DFB women won 1-0 (1-0). Annike Krahn scored the decisive goal with a header (36.).

With five games played, the DFB Team now has 15 points and made a big step towards the European Championships in Finland. Among the five teams of Group 4, the Netherlands are the fiercest competitor. Only the first-place finisher in each group qualifies directly for the European Championships 2009. For the first time ever, twelve teams qualify for the continental championships. All second-place finishers of the six groups and the four teams finishing third will battle it out for the five free tickets. Host nation Finland is qualified automatically.

Sandra Minnert concluded her career in Volendam. The veteran with now 147 caps played despite ligament damage in her left knee. She was substitued in the 88th minute under enormous applause.
