German U 17 reaches semifinal against Italy

Germany clinched first place in UEFA European Under-17 Championship Group B with a perfect record after a 2-0 (1-0) win over the Netherlands, who also qualified for the semi-finals.

Already qualified before the game against the Netherlands in Jena, Germany delighted a crowd of 6831 with goals just before and after the half-time break by forward Lennart Thy and midfielder Manuel Janzer. Germany face Italy in Friday's semi-finals, while the Netherlands take on Group A winners Switzerland.

"I'm not satisfied with the way we played today, but the final score sounds very good", said DFB-coach Marco Pezzaiuoli. "We've finished the group stage with nine points and just one goal against us, that's a great success. But now we have to focus on our upcoming matches. Italy have such a well-organised team, they are very sound tactically."

German defender Shkodran Mustafi missed on a header just past the half-hour. Five minutes before the interval, Germany took the lead when forward Abu-Bakarr Kargbo showed fine touch to set up Thy in the box, and the striker fired his second goal in as many games.

Three minutes into the second half, the Netherlands looked all set to equalise when Oguzhan Özyakup set Luc Castaignos clear, but the striker's effort bounced back off the underside of the crossbar and Shabir Isoufi headed the rebound over. Germany went straight down the other end and from outside the box, Manuel Janzer produced a superb drive to double the lead.
