German U 17 miss World Cup final after loss to Nigeria

Germany’s U 17 national team has missed the finals of the FIFA World Cup in Korea. The team, which is coached by former Champions-League-winner Heiko Herrlich, lost to African champion Nigeria 1-3 (1-2). On Saturday (9 am) , the German team battles for third place against Ghana. Nigeria meet Spain in the final at 12 noon.

Early goals by goalgetter Macauley Chrisantus (10.) and Yakubu Alfa (18.) brought Nigeria in advance. Germany battled back and cut the Africans lead by Toni Kroos' goal (33.) In the second half, the Germans set their opponents under pressure to reach their first final since 1985, when Germany lost to Nigeria as well. But Kabiru Akinsola's late goal destroyed all their dreams.

"This defeat is allright, because we have started very badly. The 1-2 by Kroos gave ne hope, and then we tried to turn the game", Herrlich said, "now we want the third place."
