German U 17 beat Ukraine 2-0

Germany's under 17-year started the European Championships in Belgium with a 2-0 victory against Ukraine and underlined their status as one of the favourites of the tournament.

The german team led by playmaker Toni Kroos (Bayern München) dominated the first half and created some good chances to score. But it took a penalty by Sascha Bigalke to give Germany the lead (25th). Kroos crowned his performance by scoring the second goal with three minutes left in the second half.

Germany will face France on Friday (6.30 P.M.) and Spain on Monday, May 7 (all games live on Eurosport). The tournament lasts until May 13.

"If we want to fullfil our dream of qualifying for the U17 World Cup, we need to finish in second place in our group, or in third place and win a playoff game against another third-place-finisher. It will be a real challenge", said DFB-coach Paul Schomann.

The tournament in Belgium is the 25th anniversary of the European U17 Championships, which started out as the U16 Championships (1982-2001). Germany won the tournament in 1984 and 1992. Reigning champions are Russia, who did not qualify for the tournament in Belgium. In 2006, the German U17 reached the semifinals.
