“Game of the year” against Mainz for Lüneburg

Regionalliga side Lüneburger SK Hansa will be overjoyed when the day finally comes – that day being August 12th. That Saturday sees them take on Bundesliga side 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the first round of the DFB-Pokal. Thomas Lohmann of the LSK board can’t wait for the encounter against the Zerofivers: “Our young team are raring to go against the Bundesliga players.”

This is just the second time that the Lower Saxony outfit are making an appearance in the DFB-Pokal. They made their debut in the tournament in 2008/09, playing Bundesliga side VfB Stutgart and losing to them 5-0. Mainz have showed some weaknesses in the recent past, consistently failing to get past the second round in each of the last five years.

LSK will enjoy home advantage - at the Heinrich-Langeloh-Platy in Bardowick - in the game against the Zerofivers, who finished in 15th place in the Bundesliga last season. There will be extra mobile stands deployed for Lüneburg’s “game of the year” in order to make space for around 4,000 spectators. At a minimum, the Regionalliga outfit will be looking to celebrate their first DFB-Pokal goal and make club history in what will be their second game in the tournament.
