From 2-0, to 2-3 and then 3-3: Havertz saves Leverkusen after Gomez hat-trick

A lightening quick hat trick from Mario Gomez was not enough to give VFL Wolfsburg all three points in the final fixture of Matchday 26 away at Bayer Leverkusen. The three goals in eight minutes appeared to have settled the game in favour of the visitors, only for Leverkusen youngster Kai Havertz to secure a point late on. Wolfsburg lie one point about the relegation play-off place, while Leverkusen are two points better off.

Gomez struck in the 80th, 83rd and 87th minutes to turn the game on its head after Karim Bellerabi and Kevin Volland had given the hosts a two-goal lead. Wolfsburg had the games better chances, hitting the bar twice, but Havertz denied them in the closing stages to ensure Leverkusen coach Tayfun Korkut could at least celebrate his 43rd birthday with a point.

Ingolstadt stay in touch

Ingolstadt stopped a winless run of four games and gave themselves a lifeline in the battle to avoid relegation by defeating Mainz 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The win reduced the gap to the relegation play-off spot to seven points.

It a tight tussle of few clear chances Roman Brégerie gave Ingolstadt, who had collected one point from their last four, the early lead. A Marvin Matip own goal following a Levin Öztunali free kick drew Mainz level but the home side regained the advantage straight away when Florent Hadergjonaj’s cross-cum-shot fooled Jonas Lössl in the away goal and settled in the back of the net. The defeat was Mainz’s eighth on the road in the last nine attempts.
