Freiburg’s Magull: “We want to stay concentrated”

Second place in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga, the second best defence, the best attack and an impressive 2-1 home win against Turbine Potsdam who hadn’t dropped a point until then. SC Freiburg are in good form at the moment and Lina Magull is a player at the centre of it – she grabbed both of her team’s goals in their aforementioned win against Potsdam.

In this interview with DFB.de, the Germany national team player speaks about the current situation at Freiburg and why you shouldn’t take the current table too seriously. However, the 22 year old reveals the secret to her side’s success.

DFB.de: Ms. Magull, how good does it feel when you look at the current Bundesliga table?

Lina Magull: We’re obviously enjoying it, until now our performances. It’s a good indicator of our performances so far, at the moment we’re enjoying looking at the table. However, we don’t want to exaggerate the situation, but rather stay focussed and concentrated. Both of the upcoming encounters in Essen and against Sand will be very tough, we won’t be able to take our foot off the gas.

DFB.de: A quarter of the season has now passed, will you be able to keep up with the other teams at the top?

Magull: Being a little humble is definitely good for us. We started well and are now the only unbeaten team along Wolfsburg. However, we know also that we’ve still got a lot of work to do, we’re not playing for the title.

DFB.de: You’re only a point behind the table-toppers Turbine Potsdam.

Magull: Like I said, we’re proud and happy about our good current situation but that doesn’t mean we’re going to become sloppy or arrogant.

DFB.de: Potsdam had five wins from five games until they faced Freiburg...

Magull: I had a good feeling before the game. My goal to make it 1-0 after half an hour played perfectly into our hands. After making it 2-0 shortly after the break I actually thought we had the game in our hands and nothing could go wrong. In the final stages they got a goal back and it obviously became more tense – we could have done without that, it was unnecessary.

DFB.de: You scored both goals, things are going well for you at the moment.

Magull: Yes it is. I feel good and I’m happy that I was able to help the team with both goals. I hope it continues like this.

DFB.de You were missing two Germany internationals in Hasret Kayikci and Lena Petermann against Potsdam. Yet despite this, you still won the top-table clash. Does this illustrate the new strengths that SC Freiburg have?

Magull: Absolutely, I think it shows our strength that we can win a game like that with so many important players missing. In these situations, someone else has to step up and take responsibility. We definitely have the quality. But of course, in the long-term, we won’t able to replace the skill that Hasret and Lena bring to our side.

DFB.de What’s the secret to your success at the moment?

Magull: This is no secret really. Our unbelievable team spirit is what sets us apart and makes us strong. You could see that against Potsdam. We have already spoken about how people need to step up if things aren’t going our way or someone’s having a bad day. We’re having a lot of fun as a team at the moment.

DFB.de Are you now looking towards the top of the table or have you got an eye on the teams at the bottom?

Magull: Neither to be honest. We are enjoying the situation we are in at the moment and our focus is only on the next game against Essen. That is the next big challenge ahead of us. We will do everything we can to ensure that our unbeaten run continues on. Our position in the table will then look after itself. However, constantly looking at the table means very little and could distract us from our goal. We have to look at how we can pick up more points.

DFB.de You have a contract with VfL Wolfsburg, running until 2018, but are currently on loan with SC Freiburg. This is now your second season at Freiburg. Do the two clubs’ football philosophies match in a way?

Magull: I don’t think we should look to compare ourselves with Wolfsburg. We wouldn’t be doing ourselves any favours that way. At the moment, we are on the right path. But when you are the two squads respectively, then you will see some pretty big differences. At Wolfsburg, the squad is made up of national team players from all sorts of different countries. In Freiburg, we are just at the beginning and a little way off that yet. We are just taking everything in our stride. But after six good performances in the league so far, we won’t be taking our foot off the gas. That’s not we are about in Freiburg.
