SC Freiburg’s UEFA Europa League campaign has come to a premature end. Christian Streich’s side were beaten 2-0 by Slovenian Cup winner NK Domzale on Thursday night, with a 2-1 aggregate loss seeing them fall short of the play-off round.
Around 800 German fans made the trip to support SCF for their return leg abroad, but things started taking a turn for the worse in the second half. Caglar Söyüncü was penalised for a pull in the box and Senija Ibricic stepped up to cancel out Freiburg’s first-leg lead from the penalty spot after 50 minutes. Disaster struck just nine minutes later when Lovro Bizjak doubled Domzale’s advantage, and despite throwing everything at it, the Black-Forest side were unable to find a response.
Freiburg will now be able to fully focus on the Bundesliga, not to mention the DFB-Pokal, which begins for them on 12th August against Regionalliga side Germania Halberstadt.
