Freiburg claim home win over Hertha

SC Freiburg have kicked off the second half of their campaign with a home victory. Christian Streich’s side secured a 2-1 victory against Hertha BSC on matchday 18 in the Bundesliga, keeping them in contention for the European qualifying spots. Germany U21 Janik Haberer and Nils Petersen were on target for Freiburg, before Julian Schieber scored a late goal for the visitors.

This was Hertha’s third straight defeat on the road, and after last weekend’s 3-1 loss in Leverkusen, they are still without a point this year. Coach Pal Dardai’s team still sit in sixth place though with 30 points to their name.

Super-sub Petersen on target

Freiburg executed their high-intensity game plan as usual and waited for Hertha to make a mistake. However, the 23,800 spectators in Freiburg’s Schwarzwaldstadion did not get to see a shot on target until the 37th minute – Hertha’s Per Skjelbred fired narrowly wide from distance. Freiburg took the lead through Haberer with practically the next attack, as the former Hoffenheim man converted with a precise low shot on 39 minutes.

Hertha managed a better start in the second half and created some good opportunities and keeper Alexander Schwolow was forced to make a great save against former SCF player Vladimir Darida on the hour-mark. Berlin were pushing for the equaliser but instead Freiburg doubled their advantage as Nils Petersen scored just 13 minutes after coming on as a substitute. One minute later, Schieber bagged what turned out to be just a consolation goal for the capital club.
