Freiburg and Frankfurt play out goalless draw

SC Freiburg are never able to start the season with a win. This year they came away with a 0-0 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt, and they have now been waiting 16 years for their first victory on the opening day of the season. For Frankfurt, it was their first away point after seven consecutive away losses last season. However, the dominant team from Hessen were unable to end their eight year run of winless visits to Freiburg.

Video assistant helps Frankfurt

After a closely fought opening fifteen minutes, Freiburg did manage to get the ball into the back of the net. However, Tim Kleindienst’s strike was ruled out by the video assistant referee because Florian Niederlechner had strayed offside earlier in the move. After this, Freiburg dominated the game for a short time. However, Christian Streich’s team were making too many errors. Consequently, Frankfurt were unfortunate not to take the lead before half time, as Haller hit the bar, and de Guzman had his shot saved by Schwolow. The team from Hessen were also the better team following the change of ends, but they were ultimately unable to break the deadlock.
