Freiberger: “BVB are a dream draw”

The big surprise of the DFB Cup round of 16 was third-division side Sportfreunde Lotte’s comfortable 2-0 win against second-division outfit TSV 1860 München. Kevin Freiberger turned out to be the underdog’s match winner as he assisted the first goal before scoring the second himself.

In this interview with DFB.de, the 28 year old looks back on a memorable evening and also looks forward to their upcoming quarterfinal tie with Borussia Dortmund (28th of February, 20:45 CET).

DFB.de: Mr. Freiberger, you set up a goal and scored one yourself, was that the best day of your career?

Kevin Freiberger: One of the best certainly, everything just worked - not just for me personally but the whole team. For us a dream has come true, we’re in the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup as a third-division side – that’s just incredible.

DFB.de: Describe the clash with 1860.

Freiberger: At the start both teams were getting a feel for each other, you could see that 1860 respected us. After half an hour we then went into the lead - not undeservedly - and that gave us a lot of confidence. Afterwards, we were very strong and clinical going forwards. I felt at this point anything could happen.

DFB.de: And after the goal to make it 2-0?

Freiberger: That was the next big step. You’ve seen these stories in the DFB Cup enough, at some point the other team gets a goal back and the game suddenly turns around. After about 75 minutes I looked at the clock in the stadium and thought that the time was passing really slowly. I was actually really tired at that point but I summoned my energy and made my way back into my own half to defend our lead – that hurt. After 85 minutes I was then sure we’d win.

DFB.de: What happened after the final whistle?

Freiberger: We were all exhausted, there wasn’t a big celebration. Later we watched the draw together and after I was happy to be able to go home. What we achieved only really hit me this morning, our journey in this great competition still isn’t over.

DFB.de: The next hurdle is quite a high one…

Freiberger: We were all hoping to face Bielefeld. On the one had because it’s an interesting tie for the region, but on the other because we’d have better chances of advancing. The fact though that we got Borussia Dortmund is also great. We’re huge outsiders but we were also that in the previous rounds against Bremen, Leverkusen and 1860, and everyone knows how these games ended. We’ll definitely give everything we have. I'm excited to see what’s possible against BVB, it’s certainly a dream draw.
