Frankfurt vs. Hamburg: Plenty of fight but no goals

Eintracht Frankfurt and Hamburger SV kicked off matchday 22 of the Bundesliga season with a 0-0 draw. 50,000 spectators at the Commerzbank-Arena watched a dogged game defined by fighting spirit, with Hamburg enjoying the better of the chances in the first half and Eintracht creating several opportunities of their own after the break.

Hasebe hits the post, Adler stands firm

Eintracht had noticeable problems building their game in the first half, which played into Hamburg's hands. The first real chance came in the 25th minute when Arjom Rudnevs shot on the turn, but Lukas Hradecky did superbly well to prevent Frankfurt going behind. Müller also came close to giving Hamburg the lead on the stroke of half time, but he caught his shot badly and it rolled wide of the post.

Frankfurt manager Armin Veh's half-time team talk appeared to do the trick, as his side had the first goalscoring opportunity of the second period. A mistake from Johan Djourou allowed Makoto Hasebe to volley goalwards, but his effort crashed against the post. The game slowed down somewhat from this point, but René Adler had to be well positioned to deny Stefan Aigner from a tight angle.

Eintracht pushed on for the winner but Adler was not to be beaten and the game ended goalless. Frankfurt, on 22 points, climb up to 14th place at least for one night, whilst Hamburg sit five points and five places above the Hessians.
