Frankfurt keep pace with FC Bayern after 1-0 win over Potsdam

Champions League winners FFC Frankfurt remain close on Bundesliga champions Bayern München's heels following a 1-0 victory over Turbine Potsdam on matchday 3 of the Allianz Women's Bundesliga. The seven-time German champions are now level on points with table toppers FCB (nine points each).

Turbine are already six points adrift of the top spot and currently occupy a mid-table position. The second match on Sunday featured SC Freiburg leaving newly promoted side 1. FC Köln no chance in a 6-1 victory. With four points Freiburg are now in fourth place, while Köln are still looking to collect their first point in the top flight and remain the bottom-side.

Garefrekes: "We desperately wanted the three points"

"It was an intense game and kept going back and forth. We are now very, very happy about this win. We desperately wanted the three points and gave everything in order to achieve it," said Frankfurt's goalscorer Kerstin Garefrekes. Turbine coach Bernd Schröder said: "It was a balanced encounter and went down right to the wire."

The first half between Frankfurt and Potsdam featured many chances for both teams as the game was played at high pace. The game-winning goal was scored midway through the second half, with Garefrekes leaving Turbine keeper Schmitz no chance with a well-placed low effort. Potsdam pushed for the equaliser in the closing stages, but Frankfurt's organised defence held firm as they claimed all three points.

1. FC Köln remain without a point

Hasret Kayikci bagged the opener from the spot in Freiburg's Möslestadium and Sandra Starke and Germany youth international Lina Magull scored in quick succession in the second half to extend their lead to three.

Lise Overgaard pulled one back for Köln, but an own goal, a second strike from Magull and Sarah Puntigam's late effort rounded off the 6-1 score-line and sealed Köln's third defeat of the season.
