Fourth substitution to be permitted in DFB Cup

Just three more wins required for the remaining teams in the DFB Cup before they can start making their plans for a trip to the capital. 16 sides will be in action on Tuesday and Wednesday in the DFB Cup, and DFB.de is on hand to provide with the most important facts for the eight games.

Pairings: Hamburger SV vs. 1. FC Köln, FC Bayern Munich vs. VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Dortmund vs. Hertha BSC – the round of 16 features three games between Bundesliga sides. FC Astoria Walldorf are the last amateur club remaining and they will host second division side Arminia Bielefeld. A third league team is also still in action in the form Sportfreunde Lotte, who will take on TSV 1860 Munich. And finally, three games feature a top flight side against a second division club: Greuther Fürth vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach, SV Sandhausen vs. FC Schalke 04 and Hannover 96 vs. Eintracht Frankfurt.

Hawk-Eye: The three Bundesliga stadia where matches will be played in this round (Munich, Hamburg and Dortmund) have the hawk-eye technology installed and will see it put to use. There are some important parameters for the hawk-eye system’s usage: first, the technology has to be installed in the stadium, which fundamentally only applies to the 18 top flight stadiums. And second, the ball used by the home team must be compatible with the goal line technology.

Fourth substitution: From this point of the competition onwards, teams are permitted to make a fourth substitution when the game enters extra time.

The path: In order to win the DFB Cup a team has to prevail from six knockout games. If a game is tied after 90 minutes, a winner is determined through extra time or a penalty shootout.

74th edition of the DFB Cup: The Cup competition originated back in 1935, when it was known as the Tschammer Cup. That makes this season the 74th year of the competition’s existence. 25 different teams have managed to win the competition over the previous 73 years of the tournament.

Record winner Bastian Schweinsteiger: The player to have lifted the cup most is Bastian Schweinsteiger. Playing for his old club FC Bayern , the former Germany international has managed to win the prestigious event seven times. He is closely followed by Oliver Kahn, Claudio Pizarro and Philipp Lahm, all with six Cup wins.

Most victories: FC Bayern have recorded the most wins in the competition overall, as they have lifted the trophy 18 times. They are followed by Werder Bremen with six wins, who have one more than Schalke 04’s five. Bayern have also participated in the most finals (21) and have defended the trophy more times than any other team (3). That also makes Bayern the side with the most games (240) in the Cup, the most wins (181) and the most goals scored (688).
