Fortuna slip up, Ingolstadt extend their lead

FC Ingolstadt didn’t just defend their lead at the top of the table on matchday 15 of the 2. Bundesliga, they extended it to five points. They were 3-0 winners at home against VfL Bochum, while second-placed Fortuna Düsseldorf suffered a shock 2-0 defeat away to last-placed VfR Aalen.

The hosts dictated the play throughout in Ingolstadt, but were lucky to see an effort from Bochum’s Stanislav Sestak cleared off the line in the eighth minute. Moritz Hartmann opened the scoring at the other end after 24 minutes, and a second should have been followed moments later. Mathew Leckie’s header hit the bar twice, and Hartmann’s follow-up also came back off the woodwork. Lukas Hinterseer didn’t make a mistake in the 66th minute though, making it 2-0, before Lecki did get a goal in the closing stages to wrap up the three points.

Düsseldorf struggled to get going in attack against a well-organised Aalen side in the Scholz Arena and were being caught on the break. One of those counters was converted in the 15th minute Collin Quaner to put VfR ahead. The crossbar then came to the rescue for the visitors from Jürgen Gjasula’s free kick, but there was no let-off for Fortuna one the hour mark after a hand ball in the penalty area, with Nejmeddin Daghfous converting the spot kick. Aalen have moved up to the relegation play-off place for now after just their third win of the season, while Düsseldorf slip down to third on goal difference.
