Former Germany international Balitsch joins coaching team

Former Germany international Hanno Balitsch has been appointed the new assistant to Germany U19 head coach Frank Kramer. He takes over from Björn Müller, who left the DFB during the winter break in order to assist Torsten Frings at Bundesliga side Darmstadt 98.

“Hanno Balitsch not only made over 300 Bundesliga appearances, he also came through all the DFB junior teams,” said Frank Kramer. “He will bring a huge amount of experience, which he can pass on to our young players. At 36 years old, he is still relatively young for a coach and will certainly be well-respected.”

Balitsch: “A huge amount of fun”

The U19s are looking to secure qualification in March for the European Championships in Georgia. They take on Cyprus in the Stadion am Sommerdamm on 23rd March. They will then face Serbia on 25th March at the Sportpark Kelsterbach. Their final group match against Slovakia takes place on 28th March at the Frankfurter Volksbank Stadion.

Balitsch, who holds the coaching A-license, is looking forward to the challenge with DFB. ”I can’t exactly complain about a lack of work at the moment. I’m delighted that I am continuing to fulfill different roles in football and am having a huge amount of fun with the challenges that are being thrown at me.”

One first-team appearance for Germany

Hanno Balitsch picked up his only cap for the Germany first team in February 2003 during a 3-1 win over Spain in Palma. He was also included in the squad on two more occasions but did not feature. In the Bundesliga, he made a total of 343 appearances for 1. FC Köln, Bayer Leverkusen, FSV Mainz 05, Hannover 96 and 1. FC Nürnberg. Balitsch also played for Regionalliga side Waldhof Mannheim in the 2015/16 season and missed out on promotion to the 3. Liga after losing the play-off against Sportfreunde Lotte. He subsequently ended his career as a player.

The midfielder was first invited to play for the Germany U16s. He progressed through the ranks in the Germany youth teams up until the U21s. He took part in the U18 European Championships in 2000 and finished in third place. He played in Argentina with the U20s in 2001 and he captained the U21 side at the 2004 European Championships.
