Former Bundesliga manager Sascha Lewandowski dies aged 44

Former Bundesliga manager Sascha Lewandowski has passed away. The district attorney and police confirmed on Thursday that the 44-year-old had been found in his apartment. Details on the cause of death are not yet known.

Lewandowski was head coach at Bayer Leverkusen alongside Sami Hyypiä from April 2012 until summer 2013. After Hyypiä’s dismissal in April 2014, he retook the reins of the Bundesliga side.

He left his most recent role as head coach of second-division side Union Berlin in March 2016 due to health issues. "We are very shocked and upset," said the Union president on the death of the manager. "Our deepest sympathy and thoughts are with the family and friends of Sascha Lewandowski."
