Flick: Sorg will take over the U21s from Hrubesch after Rio Olympics

Marcus Sorg will succeed Horst Hrubesch as head coach of the Germany U21 national team following the 2016 Olympic Games. DFB sporting director Hansi Flick confirmed the news.

“He'll take care of the U19 European Championship in Germany and then take over from Horst after Rio,” Flick stated. 49-year-old Sorg, who managed SC Freiburg for six months in the Bundesliga, has taken care of the Germany U19 national side since 2013. This year’s tournament begins for Germany on Tuesday, when they take on Spain (20:45 CEST).

Hrubesch had already entered talks with Sorg at the end of last month following the European Championship semi-final exit to Portugal but did not name his colleagues. “It would perhaps be pretty good if a younger coach came in after the Olympics. Someone who is in their 20s or 30s or is a bit younger than me and can speak the language of the players better than me.”

A change in coach amidst qualifying for the 2017 European Championship shouldn’t be a problem. “It’ll be no problem, the winter break lasts six months,” said Hrubesch. There are no plans for the change between Hrubesch and Sorg to take place prior to the Summer Olympics in Rio.
