Flick gives World Cup diary to Football Museum

The workbook used by Hansi Flick during the 2014 World Cup will join the exhibition at the German Football Museum. The new sporting director of the DFB, who was Joachim Löw’s assistant coach right up to the final in Rio, handed over a personal copy to the DFB German Football Museum Foundation at a convention for DFB’s association of sports coaches at the Kamen-Kaiserau SportCentrum.

The book, with exercise plans, tactical notes and handwritten annotations shows how thoughfully the coaching staff and the whole team approached the World Cup as a project. “Us coaches developed ideas for how we were going to go about preparing for the World Cup and for the related training. That is where the idea originated from to capture these thoughts in a book,” said Hansi Flick.

Curator Oppmann: “An exciting look at the World Cup run"

Personal notes give the work the character of a diary; the path to the fourth star from the perspective of the assistant coach. “A World Cup in Brazil is something that is so special and so great. I wanted to cherish this unique experience with something special,” said Flick.

Curator Julian Oppmann of the DFB German Football Museum Foundation said: “For our visitors, the book provides an exciting look into World Cup run from a perspective that they wouldn't have experienced themselves. What is noteworthy is the meticulousness with which Hansi Flick has designed the book. Although it is of course layed out in a more modern and computerized way, the book not only gives us a view into the past but it also shows us Sepp Herberger's successful ideas and notes.” The book should join the exhibition of the German Football Museum from summer 2015 and it will add to objects such as the boots that both Mario Götze und Bastian Schweinsteiger wore in the final. The objects should bring back memories of an outstanding World Cup in 2014 when Germany won their fourth star.
