Flawless performance by Bundesliga teams

The first Round of the DFB Cup men finished on Sunday with all 18 clubs of the Bundesliga advancing to the next stage of the competition. Titleholder and reigning German Champions Bayern München was the last team to qualify with a 4-3 (2-1) victory at Third League side Rot-Weiß Erfurt. Philipp Lahm (6th), Lukas Podolski (23rd), Miroslav Klose (57th) and Toni Kroos (80th) scored for Bayern in the first official competition match for new coach Jürgen Klinsmann, former German National Coach. Erfurt drew level three times by goals of Massimo Cannizzaro (22nd) and Albert Bunjaku (47th, 67th).

The matchday had opened with Bundesliga-side Karlsruher SC easily winning 5-0 (3-0) at SpVgg Ansbach and league rivals VfL Wolfsburg following with a 3-0 (0-0) at 1. FC Heidenheim.

Oberliga newcomers ASV Durlach made Arminia Bielefeld work hard for their 2-1 (1-0) victory. Christian Perchio missed the lead for the outsiders from the spot after 22 minutes, as Artur Wichniarek (45th) and Berit Sadik (51st) scoring for the Bundesliga-side.

Narrow escape for Leverkusen

Second Bundesliga newcomer Rot-Weiß Oberhausen had Bayer Leverkusen on the brink of defeat as well, but finally lost 2-3 after extra-time. VfB Stuttgart (5-0 at Hansa Lüneburg) and 1899 Hoffenheim (1-0 at Chemnitzer FC) took their chances without problems.

The two second league sides Rot-Weiss Ahlen and 1. FC Nürnberg fought it out until the penalty shootout, where Nürnberg had the better end, winning 4-3.

The biggest upset came by Fourth League side FC Oberneuland, who entered Round two after beating Second Bundesliga team TuS Koblenz 5-4 from the penalty spot, after drawing 1-1 after 120 minutes.

Easy wins on Saturday

On Saturday Bundesliga clubs Schalke 04, Eintracht Frankfurt, Energie Cottbus, Werder Bremen, Hamburger SV, Hannover 96, Borussia Dortmund and returnee Borussia Mönchengladbach had advanced to the second round on Saturday.

Schalke 04 won against Saarland's Oberliga-side FC 08 Homburg 3-0. Eintracht Frankfurt achieved the same result at SC Pfullendorf (Oberliga), and Energie Cottbus beat Tennis Borussia Berlin 3-0, too.

Champions League contender Werder had no problems beating Oberliga-side Eintracht Nordhorn (6th league) 9-3. At the same time VfB Fichte Bielefeld, being the lowest ranked team playing in seventh league, lost to newly promoted Bundesliga-side Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-8. A Ruhr clash saw Rot-Weiss Essen, recently relegated to fourth league, losing 1-3 to long-time rivals Borussia Dortmund, runner-up of last year's competition. Hamburger SV won 3-1 at 2. Bundesliga newcomer FC Ingolstadt.

Bochum, Berlin and Köln win

Friday saw wins by VfL Bochum at Westphalian neighbour Preußen Münster and Hertha BSC Berlin at Eintracht Trier. FSV Frankfurt won the 2. Bundesliga duel with VfL Osnabrück.

On Thursday, Bundesliga-returnee 1. FC Köln beat Fifth-league side SV Niederauerbach 5-1 to advance in round two. Roda Antar, Petit, Daniel Paulus (own-goal), Milivoje Novakovic and Matthias Scherz scored for Köln, Enrico Simon for underdog Niederauerbach.
