Mesut Özil and ex-Germany international Per Mertesacker have earned their first win of the season with Arsenal in the Premier League. The World Champions ran out 2-1 winners on the second matchday of the season against the Gunners’ London rivals Crystal Palace. Arsenal had slumped to a surprise 2-0 defeat against West Ham in their opening home game of the season.
Mertesacker and Özil were both named in the starting line-up at Palace and Özil provided the assist for Olivier Giroud to put Arsenal in the lead in the 15th minute. Joel Ward equalised not long after for the Eagles, and Connor Wickham struck the post later on in the half.
Things took a turn for Palace after the break though, as an own goal from Damien Delaney put Arsenal back in the lead, with the Irish centre back turning in a header from Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez. The own goal proved to be the winner, and the Gunners were left indebted to their German World Champions.
