Fiorentina knocked out without Gomez – Sevilla and Dnipro through to final

AC Fiorentina, who were without Germany international Mario Gomez, have been knocked out of the Europa League in the semi-finals. Fiorentina went down 2-0 in the second leg at home to defending champions Sevilla FC and missed out on the opportunity to reach the final in Warsaw. It was always going to be tough for the Italians after losing the first leg 3-0 in Spain last week.

Sevilla will be the favourites going into the final on 27th May against Dnipro and will be hoping to win the Europa League for the second year running. It will be a first European final for the Ukrainian side, who knocked out other Italian side SSC Napoli 2-1 on aggregate after their 1-0 win at home tonight.

Quick fire double sends Sevilla through

Carlos Bacca (22’) and Daniel Carrico (27’) scored within minutes of each other in Florence to settle the tie early on. After being criticised in the first leg, no guilt could be placed on Gomez this time around. As was the case at the weekend in the league, manager Vincenzo Montella decided not to start the 29-year-old as he remained on the bench for the whole 90 minutes.

The fifth placed side in Serie A began brightly and had the first big chance of the game through Gonzalo Rodriguez in the 16th minute however they were left with an almost impossible task after conceding two goals in quick succession. The 32,400 spectators in Florence showed their displeasure at their side’s performance at half time with a chorus of whistling.

Fiorentina started well after the restart but chances of a footballing miracle remained unlikely due to the distinct lack of chances. Their performance was summed up in the 67th minute as Josip Ilicic fired his penalty over the bar and the fans responded with sarcastic applause.

Dnipro stand tall to reach final

In Kiev, Evgen Seleznev was the hero for Dnipro. The 29-year-old Ukraine international capped off a strong performance from the hosts with the only goal of the game in the 58th minute. At the other end, Napoli striker had two great chances in the first half but he missed on both occasions from a dangerous position, whilst his chance after the break also lacked the necessary precision. Napoli previously knocked out the only remaining Bundesliga side left in the tournament VfL Wolfsburg in the quarter-finals.
