FIFA-Gala: Germany’s hopes pinned on Behringer and Neid

Olympic gold medallist Melanie Behringer is looking forward to being in the spotlight at tonight’s FIFA-Gala (18:30 CET, live on FIFA.com) in Zürich. The 31-year old FC Bayern München player could become the fourth German to receive the “Women’s World Footballer of the Year” award.

Silvia Neid is hoping to win the FIFA Best Women’s Coach Award for the third time. She already picked up the award in both 2010 and 2013. The former coach of the German women’s national team is up against Pia Sundhage (Sweden) and Jill Ellis (USA). “It’s a great achievement to win an Olympic gold medal with your team,” said Neid’s successor, Steffi Jones. Neid stepped down from her position as head coach after winning the Olympic gold medal in Rio. Since then, she has been working for the DFB in charge of the scouting department for women’s football.

Behringer: “It would top off the year nicely”

“It’s a great honour to be shortlisted for this award,” said midfielder Melanie Behringer ahead of the FIFA-Gala. “I would love to win the award. It would top off the year nicely.” Behringer is up against Marta (Brazil) and last year’s winner Carli Lloyd (USA) for the award.

Behringer was an important player for Germany at the Olympics last summer, scoring five goals throughout the competition leading up to the final. She has made 123 appearances for the Germany Women’s national team.
