Felix Brych selected for 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil

FIFA referee Dr Felix Brych has been selected to officiate at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The 38-year-old from Munich was named on the list of officials published on Wednesday by world football governing body FIFA, and will be accompanied in Brazil by assistants Mark Borsch and Stefan Lupp.

"The selection of referees was based primarily on personality and football understanding – that is, the ability to read the game and the teams' tactics", explained FIFA. In total, 25 three-man teams of officials and eight "support duos" from 43 different countries have been nominated.

Brych officiated at 2013 Confederations Cup

Before the World Cup begins, the chosen referees will attend three seminars in February, March/April and ten days before the start of the tournament. According to FIFA, the officials will be closely observed and supervised during this time to ensure they are in top form by the summer.

Brych, who holds a doctorate in law, is already well acquainted with Brazil. As the only DFB referee at the 2013 Confederations Cup, he oversaw Mexico's match against Japan in Belo Horizonte.

The FIFA referee has officiated 171 Bundesliga matches, 24 internationals and 37 Champions League matches as well as representing the DFB at the football tournament of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. He is currently in Majorca preparing for the second half of the Bundesliga season with his German top-flight colleagues.
